The Mediterranean Diet is based on the traditional foods of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. People in that part of the world tend to have lower rates of heart disease and other health problems. They follow an eating plan that is low in red meat and high in fresh fruits, veggies, legumes, low-fat dairy, and whole grains. They also eat healthy fats from fish, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. They flavor their food with herbs and spices, instead of salt. And they drink moderate amounts of red wine (but that’s optional, of course). Best of all, the fare is delicious.
