Being curious about others can be a really good thing. It can help you learn more about people who may be different from you. It can help you see the world from that person’s point of view. And that can help you be more understanding and kind. It’s a great way to increase your empathy.
A great place to start is to ask people questions about themselves. This works best with people you don’t know very well, like a new coworker, the barista who makes your coffee, or a postal worker. Strike up a conversation. Ask where they’re from or how they like their job. Be polite and respectful, of course. You don’t want to seem rude or nosy. And know that some people may not want to engage. That’s OK, too. But in many cases you’ll learn a little something about someone new. And, in the process, you can help develop better empathy.
